I want to put a true dual (with crossover) system in my 1997 F-150 with the 4.6 V8. What do I need to know to make this work? How bad will this mess with the emission system etc.? What, if anything, do I need to consider to make the computer system work with this setup? Do I need to put a pair of aftermarket cats in, or should I just leave them off? What kind of troubles will I run into without cats (shops won't work on my truck, etc.)? I'm in central Wisconsin, and there is no emission testing here, so I'm not too worried about those aspects of it.
Hi flow cats would be too much flow for the comp. to handle. we did this to our old '97 with the 4.6.

Where the y pipe meets and it goes into single cut it off so the driver's side pipe points strait at the other pipe. We then went drove to the shop (very noisely) and had them fab up a fully welded 2.5 inch pipe system with crossover to the outside of the rear reciever hitch. Also get some big (22x4 we used) tips.
A bit on the loud side but it had a really good tone.
Before you do anything, I suggest you check out www.headerdesign.com. It is a free site absolutely loaded with valuable information. I learned a lot. Be sure to register and run their header calculation and carb. programs. I am certain you will be surprised. Good Luck
