Joe, you'll need a multimeter to check out the TPS. Refer to my previous post on the procedure. If the TPS is faulty, it'll have an erratic voltage reading when the throttle is advanced.

Take a straight pin and backprobe the connector wires, and touch the multimeter probe to the pin. There are three wires coming from the sensor, and you're looking for the one that has about 1v with the key on. (This is the signal wire. One other wire will have 5v, and the other is a ground.)

Once you find the signal wire, look for a smooth voltage increase when the throttle is advanced. If you have an erratic reading, the TPS is bad. Do the checking with the key on, engine off.

Good luck.

before going any further, I hope is what a friend checked was the tfi module, where exactly is the TFI module located ?
Does the distributor need to be removed for replacement of the TFI Module itself. A friend is doing the work for me i hope he checked the TFI and not something else. The only reason he is doing the work is because i work 13 hr days and he is laid off at this time. After reading other post i do believe this to be the TFI.
tHX so much

The TFI module is mounted to the side of the distributor. It takes a special socket sometimes to remove it. Another poster was asking about testing the TFI module and I looked it up in my fuel injection book. The author of that book said there is really no good way to test the TFI module without special test equipment. Another poster wrote in you could do a few experiments with it though. If it's heat related though, I don't know how you can see if it will fail. I guess you could use a hair dryer?

Some folk's say it has to be removed !

what should i expect to pay for the TFI MODULE ?

i AM WITH YOU ON THIS FRANKLIN if it only breaks down with heat, i will just change it out.

You're thinking of the Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) which is under the rotor inside the distributor. '84-91 TFIs are mounted to the side of the dist and '92-96s are on the driver's inner fender under the hood hinge.

I guess I should add my two cents. Have you tested the voltage from the O2 sensor these can cause drivability problems
Also chech the fuel pump ground on the lower manifold bolt drivers side nearest the fire wall. Also I didn't see any mention of a fuel filter. How about a fuel pressure regulator. Coil, coil wiring
Coil high tension lead. Well I guess that was more like 2.5 cents worth, One more thing check the map sensor vaccume supply
