I have a 1985 with a 4.9L engine with the Carter YFA carb. It got to where sometimes it didn't want to idle smoothly, so I got a rebuild kit and did a rebuild. I knew that I had some vacuum leaks and took care of those while the carb was off. Put everything back together and now the truck will only run if you keep at least a 1/4 throttle on the accelerator. If you let the rpm's drop, the engine will purr and then start sputtering after about 20 seconds and then just dies. Have taken the carb off 4 times to be sure it was put together correctly and have found no problems. The idle mixture screw doesn't seem to make a difference. Also, I have hooked up the vacuum gauge and it stays around 20 until it starts sputtering. I would appreciate any help on this since I am at a loss??
Wanted to add that I tried blocking all of the vacuum ports to see if I had a leak and this seemed to extend the time before it starts sputtering and dies at idle, but it basically doesn't make a difference. According to my manual, if I disconnect all the vac lines and plug the ports, the computer should put the engine in open loop mode causing it to run rich and idle slightly higher helping to troubleshoot. Since I did this and it still wouldn't idle, I am thinking the carb is defective.
