The beds and the tailgate are identical.
The only difference is that 92+ XLT's have the black reflective trim, and the XL's have stickers instead of the imprints the 87-91's had.
The late 1991+'s have different taillights as well.
The 87-91 trucks had different side trims as well.

'87-96 F-150 beds are mechanically identical. It's the older ones that have different body lines and t/gs. The 2 styles of taillights used in those years are totally interchangeable - it's just that the '87-91s had wraparound backup lights.
