I have a Dana 70-B with 4.10 gears in my 1976 F-350. Can someone tell me if this diff has a single piece carrier, or a 2-piece carrier. It is not a limited slip.
Both! Unfortunately there are about 6 styles for the D70's which include options which use the D60 bearings and seals too. The only way to know for certainni what your axle is would be to tear it down. The Bill of Material (BOM) should be stamped on the top of the axle tube that number will tell you what variant of D70 it originally was, which will tell you which seals, which bearings and which carrier. see this link for much much more!! Some Specifications on the Dana 70:
Max gearing is a massive 7.17:1
Excellent Locker Selection
1.5” 35 Spline Shafts
Max Torque Rating: 8,000 lb-ft or 8,800 lb-ft for the HD
Thanks, RunninD; that's some good data. Will the code stamped on the right side of the axle shaft tell me if I have a 1-piece or 2-piece carrier? Is there a site that will interpret the code for me? What I'm trying to do is upgrade my Dana 70-B with a PosiTrax traction system. I spoken to tech support at Richmond Gear, and they need to know the carrier type before they can give me the correct part number.
I'm not sure I understand how to tell if I have a 1-piece or 2-piece, even if I had the cover off.
If it is not a Limited slip then I believe that it will be a One piece carrier, but to be on the safe side here is a bit more info for you to try. http://www2.dana.com/pdf/XGI.pd which is a Dana site, and Dana/Spicer Bill Of Material Numbers which gives a run down of the various numbers yours is probably in there.
