my truck has a BW 1356 transfercase in it and its not getting any power to the front wheels. my first thought was that the chain broke but it is ok, any ideas??? also when i put it into 4 Low and then put it back into the 2Hi position it is still in 4Low and it takes a while to get it back into 2Hi
FORDCRAZYMAN,
I went through the something similar not long ago when I found my four wheel drive wouldn't engage in the middle of a Wyoming snow storm. Lotsa fun. What I found was that the electric motor that engages the transfer case has a limit stop for 2hi where it normaly rests. It's just a small piece of plastic tube-like stuff that's held onto the little circuit board with a screw down the middle to hold it. The plastic stuff wears out or the screw comes loose, and it doesn't position right and bingo, no engagement because the computer has to read a.) speed sensor below 55 mph and b.) your already in the 2hi position. Any one of these conditions not met and no go. Also the motors on these have a tendency to leave alot of build up from the brushes on the commutator, limiting the motor travel. In either case, it's an easy fix if this is the problem. Run a search in the Explorer forum, they've got a lot of links and info on this. BTW the dealer's are aware of this and rather than break down the motor unit and clean or R&R it (1hr. to 1 1/2hrs. with beer breaks) they just replace the whole unit at cost of around 400 smackers.
When I bought mine it came with auto-locking hubs. Which means you dont have to get out and turn the hubs in to lock position. I thought they were ok until I actually had to use them. It turns out the guy sold me a truck with both hubs broken. Im not sure what was wrong with them but when I got stuck in a field all they did was grind and pop. As it turns out the auto locks are not very reliable. I put manual warn hubs in and they have worked great ever since. You said the driveshaft turns how about the axles? do they turn aswell in 4x4? You might have a front end gear problem. I am guessing you have a TTB 50 in your f250.
Sorry, I think you said you had the hubs unlocked so I guess you dont have auto hubs
You could have a broken shift fork or a broken lockout gear or hub or stripped gear inside the transfer case. Pulling your transfer case apart is quite easy but you might want to have a manual before you tackle it. It can actually be almost totally pulled apart and fixed without removing it from the truck but it is easier to work on if you remove it.
I'm sure that PG Motors could fix it for you
