I have a 1989 F150 with the automatic overdrive transmission. For the other members who have this transmission, where does yours typically shift at, under light throttle? Mine shifts from first to second at 15 MPH, second to third at 25 MPH, and overdrive typically comes in at around 40 MPH. If I am driving real slow and let off the gas at about 35 MPH, overdrive comes in then. Does that sound about right?
That's about what my 1981 F100 does. Mine is behind a modified 351W that I installed
in the truck and it runs great. My 351W is carburated and has a rod that controls the
tranmission.
I had it rebuilt by a good transmission private shop that used a good kit and careful
assembly. No special parts or components. It been there for about 20 years and
40,000 miles. I don't really baby it and have sometimes pulled a car trailer with it
with no problems. I am looking to replace the rod TV control with a cable setup, but
have not yet worked it out.
Mine does the same. It is original to the truck and now has over 100,000 miles on it and still runs well. I have the lokar cable kit on mine. My mileage still stinks though. It is about the same as my dads truck with a c6.
The cable will give better adjustment than a rod. The rod did fine in the stock application which was a 302 with the stock 2bbl carb. I changed it to a 351W which I built for the truck with a Holley 4bbl carb. The throttle hookup is slightly different than the stock 2bbl and that is why I want to fabricate a cable TV hookup for it.
