I just got a new-to-me 2007 Ranger 4x4, 4.0l engine, auto trans, under 17K miles. It has a tach, and since I've never had one, I wondered how many RPM my engine would produce. With the transmission in Park (also tried in Neutral), I slowly accelerated until the pedal reached the end of its travel. The RPMs climbed up to 3500, then the engine started to surge and hesitate while the RPMs swung between 3000 - 3500.
That didn't seem right, but a friend told me the engine probably has a limiter or governor programmed into a chip to protect it under no-load conditions.
Is this true of my truck? If there's a problem I want to get it fixed while I have a limited warranty. Thanks for any input on this!
^+1 on the Rev Limiter, my 94 3.8L Taurus also has one programmed in & it cuts the fuel injector duty cycle back, sorta like an electronic throttle. Prevents go fast rev crazy folks from themselves & having the engine come unraveled & making a real mess!!!
