I have a 1989 F250 HD with a 460 engine, 4.11 rear and C-6 tranny. Very reliable but terrible mileage. I get between 9-11.5 depending on the RPMs. What tranny could I install instead of C6? I want something heavy-duty with an overdrive. I also want something as bullet-proof as the C6 for hauling 8-9,000 loads.
Did '89 F250 HD every come with anything other than C6?
What about E4OD, would that work? How much does it cost?

The E4OD would work except that you'd need a computer to run it. Baumann Engineering makes a stand-alone controller for the E4OD so that is a possibility. Although the E4OD is based on the C6 it really is not as strong, even in its latest most improved versions. You probably want to be looking at an add-on overdrive such as the Gearvendors or USGear units
I want to find a used E4OD in a junk yard with some miles on it and get a good deal this way. I realize Gear Vendors OD is the ultimate but I am not going to drive this truck that much so it is not very cost-effective.
This tranny should work for me. I mean, if E4OD was used on latter F250HD models.
Better check with Baumann first on their controller, it isn't going to be cheap either by the time you buy and rebuild the E4OD and hook up their controller.
I would think that you're not going to do too much better with a 460 than 11.5mpg when it's an 89. I would think that the cost of installation and everything would be more then the gas difference, but thats just me.
