Alright, so I've got a 1968 Ford F100 with a 390 bored .030 over (only 1600 miles on it). When i had it built i went ahead and and put a 270 cam in it. I have a Holley 650 4bbl vaccuumed secondaries. My original 3 speed trans is almost gone now. Im going to have it rebuilt and probably bore the gears out a little for harder shifting and my question for everyone is what stall converter would do best for a nice street rod-like quality? And also would a 3.55 rear end or 3.73 rear end do better? I'm wanting to get my truck to peel tires away and this stock rear end and trans are holding me back. HELP?
Ya know, IMHO, it is really best to call the mfg of the tq converter you want direct and ask them..there are alot of variables not just on your vehicle but the design features each mfg puts into their converters...size, etc. Tell what you got, want you use it for and what you want it to do....they will give you the size 7 stall speed rating for a specific product.
I have never had a problem breaking the tires loose with a built 390 or the 460, with a cam, that I have in my truck now. I'm running the stock converter and have a 3.73 gear. I also have 12.50x33x16.5 street tires.
so maybe its just my rear end. i still gotta get the number off the door plate and figure out what i have. its geared high for sure, i change into second gear at like 10 mph then into third at like 20-25. unless im ******* it. im thinking ive got a 4.10. and the main reason i want the stall is so i can idle my truck down, its idling close to 1500 because of the cam pullin the truck so hard
what gears you have now ?
i just rebuilt my 390 with a 256/262 lunati cam , 600 dbl pump , headers and i can smoke the 275/60/15
my truck has factory c6 and factory 325 gears
i haven't got a chance to figure out what kind of transmission is on it yet, im at college and my truck is at home lol, but i think it is actually a c4 and yes it is automatic. my uncle helped me rebuild it and he suggested putting the 3.55 rear end with a detroit positrac locker and then getting somewhere between a 2000 and 2400 rpm stall...i cant burn my tires from a dead straight stop with what i have now, i have to turn it pretty sharp...maybe my rear end is a 3.25?..ill check in a couple weeks when im home and post it when i can
oh yeah, the motor is real strong and runs real good. it will straight roll to 60 from a dead stop but it will not burn the tires for some reason..now turning off a road and dropping the gas to her will make it spin until i get completely straight again...my uncle told me a stall and locker would make it peel rubber without struggling
