I just did my ball joints and ujoints, which was just a big hassle. It's a 2003 f250 4x4 5.4. I also replaced the knuckle seal, dust seal, new o rings on the hub and the locking hub. My question is after it was all put back together I tried to turn the axle and it seems really tight like something is binding somewhere. I thought maybe it needs to be broken in a little bit but its really tough just to turn it by hand. Im thinking the only thing it could really be is maybe that damn knuckle seal. I made the tool from a pipe and flange rather than spending all the money on the "special tool". Im thinking maybe it was pressed on too far or not far enough. Im definitely stumped as to what to do. But im wondering if anyone has ever had the problem before? If anyone has any advice on what to check or what to do about this it would be greatly appreciated. Snow will be coming very soon and I need to get this figured out but I'm stuck on what to do. I've searched all over for things on this topic and can't really find anything.
I just used the pipe when I did mine with no problems. Have you tried locking in the hub and turning the wheel by hand that might give you a better feel for how tight it is...
Yeah we did try that and when we did that it wasn't as nearly hard to turn it wasn't free spinning but definitely a little tight. My dad was helping me and thought when we tried spinning it when locked in it actually wasn't that hard to spin. Maybe im just worrying too much about it. I just want to make sure I don't cause further damage to something else because after doint it once i don't want to have to tear it all apart again. Definitely the most difficult repair ive had to do and a big pain in the a**. When you pressed the knuckle seal on it wasn't flush with the axle right? Mine was just sticking out just a little bit.
I am not sure , I guess if the seal isnt pushed all the way on it might be a little tight. I think mine was a little snug right after I did it. I guess I would run it for a day or two and recheck it and see if it has loosend up at all.
yeah i think im just going to let it go for a little while and check it again. i stopped by the ford dealership and they told me it'll be tight until it breaks in and thats normal. so like you said im gonna let it be for a while. thanks for the advice.
