some of the screws on my 1 brl YFA Carter carb came loose and cannot be tightened or holding torque.
Do I have to take the carb to a machine shop or is there other simple idea to fix them worn threads in the carb body. I heared there is something like locktite blue, any info on such compound.
There used to be a Locktite Form-a-thread. It is a liquid that sets up after installing the screw. Been awhile, not sure if it is still available or not.
I had that happen on my two barrel carb. I used a self tapping machine screw, you have to cut off the drill bit end on it. Then cut it to the proper length.
They call them heli-coils. I believe the threads are 10-24 on the YFA. You are experiancing a very common problem with thes carbs, the engine vibration causes the screws to work loose, eventually completely stripping the holes. Carter used a strange looking "prevailing torque" screw that looks like it has been stepped on (it appears triangular when you look at the end). This was a fairly good idea, but... the pot metal (zinc alloy) body creeps from heating and cooling and the screws start to loosen. Engine starts to run rough, shakes the carb worse, they loosen more. You get the picture. If you can get something in the carb body to hold them, I used to always loctite them on any I rebuilt to prevent problems.
Loctite is a familiar name when I was working as an Aircraft mechanic,we used to put that compound on engine bolts threads before installation just to make bolts removal easy next time it needs to be removed.
But the loctite we are talking about is to lock the screws in place, was it the same or different?.
