So I have a 1989 f150 and it has just a bone stock 302 v8. I want to get alil more power and more reliability and I'm not to worried about gas milage. I was planning to do a junk yard build cuz I'm only 22 and can exactly buy new everything. So what is the largest motor I could go and still be reliable. Is a 460 even possible or am I stuck to a 351 and smaller. By the way it needs to stay street legal
you could go with a carbed 460. i dont know if you know this but there are other bigger trucks such as the f250. F350 that have 460 engines in them. so its not a case of if it will fit, its a case of how you want to do it
so your 22, cant buy everything new, but arent worried about gas mileage? maybe if you had a vehicle that was gonna get better then 6MPG, youd have alot more money to spend on newer things.
but not to be useless, if you can buy it, it will fit. carbed 460 with a C6 will fit. and depending on where you live, dont forget about emissions.
Do some maintenance work (Six Liter tune up) along with opening up the exhaust before you go swapping engines. You'll need a 460 trans since the smallblock one's won't work. Throwing more power into an old truck has the potential to break things quickly. Not having much money + a gas hog is a bad combination. My truck stays parked unless I need it, otherwise I'm driving my little hatchback.
I'm not worried about gas milage because I work 3 miles from where I live. I would have gotten a larger truck but this is what I was given as a present. And I'm in California the worst state for emission.
my understanding is in CA you can't swap your engine for anything bigger than original or older. they really only allow you to replace a blown engine and you'd have to keep the fuel injection.
