bought a 65 f100 with a 352 last winter and been driving it occasionally. riding through town last week and the motor begins misfiring/backfiring/ idleing rough and stalling at red lights(auto tranny). anyway i make it home pop the hood notice one of the valve cover is smoking, and black smoke coming out the exhaust. as far as the motor i don;t know the last rebuild. the PO put a 390 4v intake on it from a sixty something thunderbird and a 600 edlebrock(rebuilt by me). the valve covers have no egr and there is a exhaust manifold leak between the heads and the headers around #5 cylinder. anybody have any ideas? thanks in advance
sorry i wrote so much, just trying to make sure i include all the variables
Black smoke would be gas, you may have a spark plug not firing, which will cause ahat you are saying. Take a inductive timing light and check each plug wire to see if they are firing good.
Black smoke out of the exhaust does sound like a very rich condition. The smoke near the valve cover may have just been from the exhaust leak by number 5. I would start by pulling a plug and see if it is black, indicating a rich condition. If so, try creating a metered vacuum leak by taking the vacuum hose off from the PCV valve and meter a vacuum leak with your finger over the end of the hose. If the truck smooths out you know that you need to look at the carb and see what is causing it to run rich.
figured it out!!!! I was worried @ first. during the carb rebuild i must have bent a float. it wouldn't close all the way. so it was pouring fuel down the back two barrels as well. black smoke everywhere. after that found two wire that were burn around the plug.
well it's all back together now, screamin down the road lookin for gas stations!
Glad you figured it out. I am running a 72 Ford 4 barrel intake with a 600 Holley on my 352 along with headers and C-6. She also is thirsty but fun to drive. Not really a tire sorcher but runs very comfortably down the highway.
