Looks like it may be time to replace the chunk on my 66 F100. It's making a roaring noise especially when coasting. It is also making a tapping noise most noticeable at lower speeds. Will a chunk from any 9" Ford rearend fit? If not what years do I need to look for? I am aware of the axel spline differences and will be looking for the same gear ratio. Thanks
28-31 can be an issue and you can swap the side spiders if they are not the problem. Bearings make a heck of a noise so check that first. Prop shaft joints make clicking noises as well, try greasing the U-jounts. The entire axle housing can be swapped in by moving the spring perch in a couple of inches. If I had to do this I'd go for the later housing and 31 spline unit with my favorite gear rartio and a limited slip.
Well I finally had a chance to check out the rearend. Left wheel bearing was worn some and the right bearing was totally junk. That took care of the noise and clunking and grinding and roaring and hammering etc. I had a tough time removing and installing the seals. Ended up making an installation tool out of wood that got the job done. Next time, I'm headed to Harbor Freight for a hydraulic press instead of shelling out fifty + bucks to have the bearings pressed.
Next time use a air powered cut off tool (Muffler cutter) to slice most of the way through the bearing and collar then use a cold chisel to crack the races. This way you don't bend the axle trying to press off the old bearings.
To install the new one heat the bearings in the gas grill of if the wifes not home in the oven to 300deg and chill the axle. They'll slide right on. You should still have a few blocks of wood around in case you get it cockeyed on the axle.
Yup! All true. Please, if you hit any bearing race or retainer with a chisel, wear eye protection. I hit a bearing race with a chisel, it shattered and a chunk went through my coveralls and stuck in my leg, needed needel nose pliers to get it out. If it had hit my eye I would be blind. And that my friends would be a real ^%#$.
Oh yes do wear good saftey gear. Any time you use a press to get a bearing off use a lead sheild too. I had one explode once in my 20 ton press a 1 inch chunk made it through the wall! Thats two layers of 1/2 drywall and a 4inch open air space.
