What is the best way to install one of these? I know how they work, and know they have to be in a series circut. But what are the best things to hook then too?

Insert the guage at the starter relay like shown in the above diagram. Use heavy wire, at least 10 guage, and make sure it's well protected, especially going through the firewall and at the back of the guage. This wire is unfused, and a short can cause problems in a hurry.

An accurate voltmeter IMO, is a better indicator of the health of
an electrical system......

On my 1988, it is the heavy green wire that hooks to the battery side of the starter solenoid.

Don't waste time and money on an ammeter. A voltmeter will tell much more about a charging system, it's easier to wire in, and much safer.

Thanks for the diagram guys. I agree that a volt meter is more worthwhile. but My F-150 has the factory voltmeter in it, so it allready has one.

Both rigs have one of the 3 packs of gauges, with the oil/temp/amp gauges. I figure since I allready have one, i might aswhell hook one up!
