460?

Hello Guys, after reading about the 5.0 in our trucks. I am on the hunt for a 460, i know where i can get one and all id have to do is trade a old 7.3 idi thats got high miles for it. Its out of a lincoln. What would I need to change to put it in my 1993 F150 4x4. Mines a 300 with a 5 speed. Id like to make it automatic just because they dont really make any good 4-5 speed trannys for going fast, they are all meant for towing. I want to run a carb, intake and aftermarket cam and headers. How much Power could putting them simple bolt ons get with a 460. Also will change out the timing gear set to the early model ones. What automatics will bolt up to my transfer case? Thanks for the help Guys!

These guys will have everything you need.
L&L Products

There maybe some parts here that could work too
AdvanceAdapters.com | Engine & Transmission Conversion Adapters - Advance Adapters

If you're looking for an auto trans hit up your local junkyard and find a C6 from a late 70s Ford 4x4 truck. It can behind a 460, 400, or a 351M. Grab the transfercase too.

Well i have a old 1977 frame thats rotted with the 351m as well as tranny and transfer case. Is the motor mounts the same from a 351m and a 460? Im only going to be trading the motors away. Maybe not tho because i can find late 70s 460s for a couple hundred bunks from big lincolns

the transmission from the 351m will bolt up
the torque converter can be used as well
the 429 from the lincolns have a smaller diam pilot in the end of the crank so the tq converter from the other c6 trans wont interchange (use the tq converter thats from the same lincoln the 429 come from)

the engine mounts form the 351m wont interchange
BUT they make adaptors to put 460s anywhere you want

the np208 already in your 93? should bolt up to the older c6
the np205 on the 77 c6 trans is a monster...but not really good for hyway use around town and mudding and abuse is perfect though (can be made into a twin stick xfer case make sure you change fluid in it though)

460s respond very well to any mods
yank it apart quick swap the cam (the bigger summit cam is very nice) and gearset, mark the valves and pull them out, give the ports a nice cleanup and blend job EXPECIALLY where the exh valve seat is lots of extra junk still in the heads
older small chamber heads have studs already, buy new studs and guideplates and roller rockers (old rockers are cast and ive broke a few of them). newer heads are pedistal mount and are decent rockers, but you can buy bolt down roller rockers for that as well (pedistal mount rockers) performer intake will make over 450hp and give a fantastic low end (ive done it) but the performer rpm is a nice upgrade in mid and upper end hp weiand stelth is a little much for a towing rig cause it does zero for low end tq (but ive used it a lot against what ive just said)

headers.... whatever you want just remember not to use headers from an efi engine youll need to buy headers for the 87 and older carb truck (the efi heads are hiport and exh ports dont lign up with the old heads)

What is it for a 460
stock truck with stock 625 holley and you want more
or does it have an aftermarket intake or exhaust or anything i should know about
What kind of "pep" are you refering to... quicker throttle responce or more tq range, higher rpm. What do you do with the truck

Personally, if it were a stock intake, id say give it a 2" tall 4hole carb spacer with the stock carb, and put a k&n in the stock aircleaner (sleeper look and it gets plenty of flow with the big hole in the back)
I run a modded spreadbore 850 holley on my jetboat with a stealth intake...rev it 7k all day long, and run a 700 double pump on my plow truck with a zf5 and the big summit cam and an edelbrock streetmaster intake (awesome intake for torque by the way)

stock intake isnt that bad for torque and works fine up to 5000, not saying you wouldnt gain from a performer or street master but its ok if not in the budget.

Im not wanting to make a 500 horse truck, but more like 375-maybe 400. Just something that will fry tires all day long, sound real nice, and the wow factor of being able to say theres a 460 under the hood haha. Is there a good manual transmission to bolt to the 460 that will be good for speed and not a dump truck?

If the 460 is from a Lincoln, it cannot be any newer than 1978, as this was the last year FoMoCo installed 460's in Passenger Cars.

Passenger Car 460's and F100/350 & Econoline 460's prior to mid-year 1979 are internally balanced.

No Lincoln ever came with a 429.

Thunderbird...sorry. I get them confused. Both are big and ugly and similar shaped.
Junk guys bring me the cars to strip of engine and trans and rear axle and then haul the rest away.
69/70 with the dove-c heads. And c9ve heads. Small combustion chamber.

All I can remember on rotating assy is that if there is a half moon weight behind the harmonic damper then you need to use a specific flywheel. And if you have an efi 460 it also uses a different flywheel.
Other then that they can use the same flywheel/ flexplate and it will interchange with the fe flywheel/flexplate from a 360-390.

I have looked it up...many times since these engines were first introduced. 429's were not available in any year Lincoln...period.

The 429/460 block casting numbers used 1968, 1969, 1970 & 1971/73 were the same.

The 1971/73 block casting number was also used thru 1978 and on some 1979 F150/350 & Econoline 460's: D1VE-6059-AB

429: 1968/71 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars & Thunderbird / 1972/73 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars.

460: 1968/78 Lincoln & Continental Mark / 1972/76 Thunderbird / 1973/78 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars // 1973/76 F100/350 / 1975/79 Econoline / 1977/79 F150/350 (except 1978/79 sold new in CA F150's).

FoMoCo changed the 460 mid-year 1979, has a weighted spacer. Since this was a "running change" there is no before/from a certain serial number or production date. The block casting number is D9TE-6059-AB

The flywheel and harmonic balancer used with the D9TE block are different from the D1VE block.

No 460's in E100/150's and F150's after 1979. No 460's in 1980/82 F250/350's, E250/350's only.

1983 was the first year FoMoCo offered the 460 with M/T and 4WD, F350's only initially.

See my signature, I didn't start doing this jazz yesterday.

I had edited my comment immediately when I realized it was a tbird not lincoln I got the engine from. ( look at my edit time to your post time)
I just noticed your sig... I have no doubt you've looked it up a few more times then I.

What's different on the d9 balancer and flywheel. Is that the one with the crank driven ps pump.

The D9 beginning in 1979 went to an external balance, but as a side note, this rotating assembly can go into all the earlier blocks, but not visa versa, I believe.

Yup. That may have something to do with the rear main seal area. I can't picture the difference in the cranks really. I'll have to compare the two when I get up home for the holidays.
I read the numbers wrong. You said d9 then d1 and I thought c9.
I am interested in the years the crank driven ps pump was. It's the older years I know but I'm having trouble finding the years to look for and which cars. It was driven off the crank snout behind the balancer. Instead of the spacer sleeve the pump went there and bolted to a specific timing cover as well.

Anyway. Great info. Thanks.
