Truck Temperature Problem?

The truck is a 1991 f150 351w e40d type tranny, problem is that the temp gauge needle never gets into the normal range no matter how long you drive the truck for, it comes up but just a little bit. i have replaced the thermostat but still have this problem. any suggestions?

Try grounding the wire that plugs into the temp sending unit. The gauge should swing all the way to HOT. That will tell you if the gauge is working. If it is, then you probably have a bad sending unit.

If you don't have the cooling system completely full, you won't get good heat because the heater core is located at the top of the cooling system. The temp sender is also in a high point of the system. Be sure you have the system full.

FYI.... the gauge temp sender is right in front of the #5 injector on the lower intake, a single wire pushes on over a stud in the top. The cab heat problem is usually unrelated too, most likely cause is the diverter door in the heater core compartment is stuck partially open with debris that has fallen down through the dash vents.

How do you know the transmission is getting hot quickly?
