a couple days ago I took the vacum hose off the distributor with the intention of buying a new one the next day. Later that night I needed to pick up the kids and (forgot about the hose) started the truck drove about 300 yards truck ran rough. While trying to think what could be wrong I membered I took the vacum hose off. I replaced the hose and now the truck runs fast and will not idle. Could this just be the timing needs to be adjusted or have I messed up the timing chain?
This ia a 71 302.
Thanks in advance
Jaye
Pulling the vacuum line off the distributor should not hurt the timing chain, nor should it change static timing, assuming the distributor was properly bolted down. But it probably won't hurt to check the timing and reset the idle. (Did you try to compensate for the rough running by adjusting something?)
Did you accidentally hook the vacuum advance line to a manifold vacuum source vs. ported vacuum? That would pull in ~10-15 degrees more timing and speed up the idle.
If you did, just try turning down the idle screw to adjust the speed rather than retiming. I've found carbed vehicles run a lot better with the vacuum advance hooked to a manifold source. YMMV.
The vacum advance is hooked to the carb. I think it may be the carb, when I push down on the butterfly it will idle, so I guess the auto choke needs to be adjusted. Other than installing them I don't know anything about adjusting carbs.
Thanks for the reply
