Working on my new to me 96 psd I am noticing a long cranking time,10 seconds plus,my other psd fires on the first revolution cold or hot.Just smokes a few seconds and clears right up.checked glow plugs etc and they are all ok.I'm always listening to customer pulling by the shop who are running psd's and have noticed this on more trucks. What causes the longer cranking time on some trucks.doesn't seem to matter just curious.
Mine has been taking a long time to turn over only in the morning. This worries me as it's just mild temps right now. Maybe low 40's. Will it even start when I bring it north in single digit weather? Usually takes 4 tries for it to finally turn over, then she smokes out the neighberhood for a few seconds and clears up.
I haven't come across a plug for mine. Do you guys up north plug them in? Seem's to me like a glow plug issue, but then again if the batteries are drained it may not heat the plugs up enough? I'm not a mechanic, so I'm just getting idea's for when I bring it in I can sound a little more informed.
On a side note...Does anyone else have their AC compressor kick in on the defrost setting? This doesn't make sense to me, but it's definately cold air blowing out when I just want it to vent.
A/C on defrost is a common feature on a lot of vehicles. A/C not only cools, but it also dries the air (same principle as a dehumidifier). So it's blowing dry (well, less humid) air on the windshield, which clears it faster. If you move the temp selector to the hottest setting, it will still push out A/C dehumidified air, but it will also blow it past the heater core, so it'll be, if not hot, at least warm, but still dry.
Some trucks don't have the cord coming out of the block heater in the oil cooler. Look down on the oil cooler to see if the plug is there without any cord. The cord is actually generic, available at NAPA, et al. We usu. don't plug in unless it gets below about 20F, and even then, it only needs a few hours, so a timer is a good investment.
