Coolant Leak

I have a 1997 Ford Explorer and I recently changed my belt tensioner and drive belt. When I got to the part of the project where I needed to change the belt I noticed there was some coolant residue around the thermostat housing. Thinking the O-ring had deteriorated I changed the thermostate and O-ring. After installing the thermostat and O-ring I poured antifreeze into the radiator it all began to leak out heavily near the back of the engine on the driver side. Anyone know what could be wrong?

Coolant Leak

Welcome to FTE bigdaddyforrestor!

Is this a V-6 or V-8? Am I to assume you had no coolant loss or problems prior to this?

I would suspect a intake manifold gasket that leaks while cold but "tightens up" when warm.

A guess.

Coolant Leak

Hey Thanks for Responding,

I have a V-6 engine and I've never experienced any coolant loss before this. I had the intake gaskets changed in 2000. Do they normally last just 3 years?

No, the gasket should last longer than that. You might do a pressure check of your system and see if it indeed is leaking.
