A couple hours after getting my truck inspected, I developed a huge exhaust leak right by the shifter tunnel. At least that's what I hope it is. It does kind of sound like gears rattling, but it also does it when I have the clutch in. So I hope it's an exhaust leak.
Check the breather tube off of the front CAT, it comes off at an angle and up to the EGR I believe. anyway, my just broke completely off recently after some miner work on my truck. It, it will just get progressivly worse till you fix it. I wrapped a piece of galvanized heat duct around it, and clamped it, it works like a charm.
OK, so there is no heat shield on the front cat. There is also a tube (I think it's the one you're talking about) that is attatched to the cat. If you can take a pic of what you did, I would appreciate it.

that's the AIR tube, it goes to that goofy air pump that's been on i6's since the time of moses. the egr gets its exhaust from the manifold.
if it's an exhaust leak, it will have an almost gurgle-sputter sound to it but your engine won't have a noticeable hesitation accompanying it. if you've heard a volkswagen exhaust, it's kinda the same "gurgle-pop" sound, but a bit muffled.
