Hi, I have been watching this forum for about a week and have picked up some useful information. I have a '72 F100 that I am building in pro-street form. I had a guy give me a Ford pickup the other day but he isnt sure what it is. He thinks its an early '70's and he also thinks it has a 429 in it. Its a complete truck (F250) less the rearend, but its rough. I havent seen it yet but its free so I think I'll take it for parts if anything. If the motor isnt junk I may build the big block for my '72. Right now I have a 302 in it. My question is- How do you tell if the motor is a 429 or 460? I can tell by looking if its a 385 series or an FE series but is there some markings or casting # to tell the 429 from the 460? Sorry for the long post. Thanks
Does the intake manifold run part way under the valve covers?
If so, its an FE motor. 352, 360, 390. Depending on the year. Or you could have a swapped in 428. That used to be the thing the do ( back in the day ) when your 360 or 390 puked and you wanted more power.
Check for the intake issue and let us know.

I havent seen the truck yet so I'm not sure. He said that he hasnt looked inder the hood in so long that he cant remember. I know that the FE's intake is part of the valve cover rail. The guy told me that someone told him that it was a 429 but he doesnt know how to tell what a ford motor is. I can tell between a FE and a 385 series but the actuall cubic inchis a mystery since there were so many. The way he talks, its the original motor but he dont know the year model of the truck. Thanks
