lately my truck has smelled stronger than normal. Today i looked and my exhaust is black, and even black around the outside of the pipe.
I have never seen it that black...
Can these things run rich ?? what do i need to look for ??

This stronger smell, is it full diesel that may be leaking on top of the engine with that smell coming into the cab or semi-burnt burnt fuel coming out of the tail pipe?
Does sound (look) like a lot of unburned fuel in a cylinder or two. Does it start fine, run fine or rough? You may have one of your harnesses coming loose.
yes its black. not dark black, but black. it was way over due to get changed.
Did finally do the fuel bowl o-rings today. the valley had puddles in it all the way down. thought that i had another oil leak. after cleaning it up. it was fuel..
Black fuel filter is the first sign of a failing o-ring you're gonna want to get on that really quick, before you start burning all you're engine oil!

How dose that work ?? im still figuring out these diesel motors.
Im assuming there is a return line to the fuel bowl from the head if this is happening ??
Also, I have been fooling around with my A.E. trying to figure it out. Did find and do the Buzz test on the injectors. All sound loud and the same..
Not a return line just extremely high oil pressure working against low fuel pressure will cause the oil to travel the reverse direction within the fuel lines and rails untill it returns to the fuel bowl and eventually tank!

REALLY.... Wow. So if its fighting the forward flow of fuel, at top RPM, I would actually be losing fuel pressure ?? Is this why i feel lately my truck kinda feels flat'er than normal on Higher rpm's ??

My 99 F350 7.3 has been running rich since I got it in September. I changed the fuel filter, it did nothing. I changed my thermostat, fluid, and hoses today, the guy I bought it from had a 180 degree thermostat in it, the truck takes anywhere from a 192-203 degree thermostat. I put in the 192 degree, and it does not run rich any longer. The truck is designed to run rich when it is cold and after it warms up it will lean out to normal. That was my issue, the truck was never able to get to its proper running temperature, so it kept running rich, and boy did it stink.
