Hey guys, I am going to be purchasing my mom's 2001 expedition towards the end of the year and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what rear axle it has. The code is "17". It is A4wd so I figure for this to work it must have limited slip axles unless the brakes do the shifting of the power. I already know this is going to be a big step up from my Durango as the GVWR is 7200 lbs! Also if anyone has anythings to look out for on this model year I would be interested, I hope this will be a vehicle that will last for many years to come. I have an 86 F-150 that is still going strong so I have high hopes. Dan
Thanks for the info guys. Does anyone know how the A4WD works without limited slip. I guess it must be a computer controlled thing. I remember my Dad saying, before he passed away last November, that when he took it out on the beach at the outer banks in A4WD that it just started switching power from wheel to wheel before he figured he needed to be in 4HI to get it to go in the sand. Also which rearend does it have. I know it is not the 8.8 like my F-150, it looks simular to the drawing in the second thread you told me about, is it a Dana rearend? Anyway thanks again for the info.
The A4WD stands for "Automatic 4 Wheel Drive." It automatically kicks the front wheels into action if slippage is detected in the rear. Your rearend should be a 9.75" Ford rearend. It is a significant upgrade from the 8.8" you mentioned in F150's and lighter duty cars. The front will still be an 8.8".
Thanks for the info buzzard. I can tell by looking at the engine bay that things have changed alot in 15 years at ford, hopefully they still last as long.
