Just trying to get the kinks out of my new to me 2001 f250 7.3 4wd. This was the first cold morning we had since I got it home and it was missing when I started it. After it warmed up it ran fine. I know one or more of the glow plugs is not heating my question should I change them all or just the ones that don't work. If I change the ones that don't work how do I test them? Can I buy just one or two?
Better replace them all at the same time. They're not that much and it'll save ya from having to go under the VC's again. While you're in there check the rocker bolts, do the 50ct mod and check the inj hold downs. Also inspect the uvch connectors in the vc gasket for signs of getting hot. You'll be good to go for awhile after that.
If you are on a tight budget, I would ohm them out. If you have one bad, change all four in that head. Make sure you get your plugs from Ford or International or you will be sorry later. Clay has the Ford plugs at a great price. Riffraff Diesel: Motorcraft Glowplugs
Also do the 50 cent mod a check torques while you are there.
To ohm out those plugs without taking anything apart, disconnect the 9 in connector on the inboard side of each valve cover. The pins are as follows.
1) glow plug
2) glow plug
3) injector
4) injector
5) injector common
6) injector
7) injector
8) glow plug
9) glow plug
For glow plugs put one lead of your ohm meter to ground the other to the PG pin. You are looking for approximately .8 to 1 ohm each. If any are open or shorted, they are bad.
Also check voltage drop across the GPR (glow plug relay). Put one lead of your volt meter on each of the large posts on your GPR. It should read battery voltage. Then have a helper turn the ignition to run but do not start. The GPR should energize and the voltage across the two large poles should drop to less than 2 volts. If it is at or above 2 volts, the contacts in the relay are bad and the relay needs to be replaced.
Let us know how it goes and if you need more help.
You are a couple hrs north of me, but there are brothers closer to you maybe one will chime in. Eather way if you ever get down this way let me know maybe we can meet up.
