Got a 2001 SD250 I picked up almost a year ago and there's been a consistent problem with the cruise control cutting out, especially over rough pavement. I've lived with it for now but I'm looking to dive into the problem now.
Anyone else run into that situation? Is it merely an adjustment on the switch at the brake pedal? I haven't even gotten under the dash to check for one... Just thought I'd get some feedback from guys that have been there. This is my 1st SD250.
When it "cuts out" is it turning the cruise control off, indicator on the dash as well? Have you had the recall done? Hypothetically speaking if your brake pedal vibrated enough it would activate the BPA(Brake Pedal Applied) input to the PCM to shut off the cruise control.
Have you happened to notice at night, or during the day i guess, if your brake lights are coming on as well.
Karl I'd get with the service advisor at your local Ford shop as there area couple or recalls on your truck that you should have checked out, one of them is on the cruise control and could be causing the issue, ti involves a harness in the engine compartment. The other is for the cam position sensor (CPS) they are no cost repairs and a good idea to have done! That being said I will agree with Alan the BPA can be really touchy try putting your foot under the pedal & apply a little back pressure to it next time you hit a section of road where it consistently happens, if it goes away, then we can go to what's next! Do you have adjustable pedals? If ^so move the pedals while cruise is set and see if it drops out! Let us know what happens

I'll check into the recalls ASAP. I have used the top of my foot to pull the pedal up, thinking it's an adjustment thing. It seems to help a lot of the time, almost depends on temperature... weird. I know if I barely breathe on the brake pedal the CC drops.
The indicator on the dash does go out when it drops out.
I haven't noticed if the brake lights come on when it's dropping out...
OK guys, I checked the Ford site for recall on my VIN, says none required. Maybe that also means the prior owner had them done already?
I've tried the KOEO self-diagnostics mentioned in another thread but the Cruise lamp never illuminates.
I did forget to mention in the beginning that there's a Reese trailer brake controller attached. I've never used it, the prior owner had it installed for his 5th wheel... Would that cause problems?
I just took the truck out specifically testing the cruise control. It looks like (best assumption) the brake sensor switch at the pedal is really sensitive, too sensitive. The lightest tap on the pedal or a decent bump can trigger it. I climbed under the dash to inspect and it appears to be a mercury switch or something similar? If I knew which terminals to jump I could nail it down to the switch for certain.
Kinda hate to pump an old thread but...
I checked & any recalls have been addressed. Thanks for the heads up!
I yanked the under dash panel off & have been knocking the switch on the brake pedal around a little during CC cutout. It seems to be in THAT switch but I'm curious if THAT switch is affected by the switch on end of the master cylinder? If so, would bypassing that switch be an open or closed circuit?
