I got a 2000 3.0 4x4 any way i just had the brakes done on it and the mechanic said "the roters were rotten" and "that new car roters are made of crappy metal." and needed to be replaced . Just wanted to know if anyone else ran into this or i got hosed .my truck is has only 35000 miles
35000 seems a little low to need new rotors to me. But then again, how you drive your vehicle has a dramatic affect on how the brakes wear. You didn't by chance have the work done at Midas, did you?
Hey XLTdav, I just did the front brakes on my 2001 4X4 this weekend. I had the original pads an rotors and had never been serviced in its 99000km life. I was feeling a slight vibration in the front when braking so I figured it was time.
Anyway, to my suprise I still had close to half the pad left on the outside pads and 1/3 left on the inside. The vibration was in the rotor. There was a ring of rusted rotor that was in contact with the pad at the bottom near the hub. I pulled the rotors off and them turned at a shop. They barely took anything off and they're as good as new. The shop guy said they would have no problem turning these rotors a few more times if they are in the same condition.
I'm not sure how you drive but I drive fast enough through all types of conditions (mud, dust, road salt.....) and use my brakes alot. I also carry alot of loads like the ATV snowmobile or towing the boat.
I do not want to say you got hosed but my rotors (1 year newer) with double the mileage were in great condition................ Did the actually show you the rotors?
If you want your pads/rotors to have a long life make sure you service the calipers. The slider pins get dirty and cause the brakes to stick. It is an easy job to clean the pins and should be done frequently if you spend a lot of time off-road.
