Almost started a forest fire this weekend!!

I need some help with this one - I was driving my '08 6.4 out to the coast this weekend. I had my trailer with me and going up hill, my regen kicked on. When I crested the hill, the truck shifted down (had it in tow/haul) and my dash lit up and told me "STOP SAFELY NOW". Not an easy task on a narrow two lane with no turnouts. Luckily I was able to get pulled over in less than a quarter mile. As I started to pull over, my wife saw a fire ball come out of th exhaust then a bunch of sparks. As I got the truck pulled over, the motor shut off.

I have an Edge programmer and it was set on ecomomy. The programmer gave me a 200E code (the dealer later told me this is an overheated cat). The truck would not restart and we had to get it towed back.

When the dealer looked at it, he could find nothing wrong. He said that they jumped the starter and the truck started up with no other problems or codes showing. Anyone have any ideas about what may have happened?

I think an overheated cat results from exhaust so rich with unburnt/raw fuel that the cat is burning up burning it all. If I understand how it all works, the regen is supposed to backoff dumping fuel out the exhaust when the cat and/or dpf reach a certain temperature.

That's something I'm suspicious of when tuners say they ignore or disable those sensors :-(

The truck is working ok now?

Wow. sounds like some kind of over fueling problem, When the DPFs first came into use on these trucks there were incidents where the truck would shoot flames out the tail pipe. later programming was supposed to prevent that. It won't regen in certain conditions, Park, below 35MPH. etc. Maybe the tuner overrode the truck and/or the fuel accumlated in the CAT/DOC and then just sort of exploded. How long did you wait to try restarting? Perhaps had you disconnected both batteries and then let everything reset it would have started. Of course you will never know. When you say they "jumped the starter" do you mean like with jumper cables? Just courious. Wish I could help. maybe one of these experts will come along and solve it.

The deal actually put a screwdriver between the terminals on the started. I had tried disconnecting the batteries after waiting about an hour and a half. I had a sensor go out on me before and the trauck started after an hour, so that's what I thought would happen this time alos - no luck with that though.

Truck seems to be running fine now. Just not feeling to good about turning my programmer back on. I think I will just use it for hte gauges for now.

They absolutely will begin regen under 35mph although I have never caught it trying in park. I have the most up to date flash and have had it start in regen going under 10mph several times, I hate it.

I agree, an overfueling problem brought on by the tuner.

When towing drop in down to stock.

I also agree that you should just leave it in stock form for awhile.

Which edge do you have? I have an edge racing evo (15500) and so far it works great. I keep it on level one, though I did try towing on level 2. No problems. I used it as guages before I deleted. I don't think any of the tuners do much if the truck is stock.

There's a difference between it saying it's in regen and actively regening. You may have seen it go into regen below 35, heck I've even seen it start while I was at a stop light. But it won't actively regen, dumping extra fuel, until your above 35 or so.

Park will disable it. I've put it in park a number of times and watched it turn off on my iQ.

Yes, if you watch the EGTs you will see that while in regen they stay way low until you get it spooled up. But, that may be what didn't happen in the case of your "Smokey Bear" event.

No it regens under 35mph, dead giveaway is how "peppy" it is while you are at idle and give it some throttle, you can also hear and smell it.

I have the Edge Evolution. So far it has been great. I never run it past economy mode, that's really what I got it for.

For now though, I am leaving it in stock mode.

Wish me luck, heading out on another camp trip this weekend.

Thanks For everyones help.

Even though you are only on economy mode, I don't think any tune that adds HP is a good idea with a stock exhaust, especially when towing. If I were you I'd either ditch the tuner or get a cat/dpf delete.

OK, if it's like mine, stock mode with the DPF on is just that, stock. All you have the tuner doing is acting as a gauge(s). In fact if you have the evolution as opposed to the racing evolution I don't think you can use it with the dpf deleted, is that right?

I am not sure about the dpf delete. Since I still have to pass a visual smog test, dpf delete isn't even an option for me, not that I would want to do it anyway.
