Someone please tell me what I have screwed up and how to fix it... I'm very handy but no mechanic... I recently put all new rotors and pads on my 2004 f350psd... Everything was great for a month and then I started getting a grinding noise which I isolated to my e-brake... Moments ago I took off the wheel, caliper, pads, mounting bracket and rotor to expose the e-brake shoes... Couldnt find anything really wrong or loose which would explain the occasional clanking from the drivers side rear wheel... So I take out the 8bolts to the (hub?) and fluid starts leaking out everywhere. I could see the bearing and then I pulled out that cover which had a long rod and all of a sudden I heard a metal noise (like a gear) fall and now I cant get that (axle?) back into place... What in the world do I do? Do I have to open up the rear end to guide that back into place??? Which then would mean draining all the fluid, a gasket, more fluid (gear oil)... I have no clue as to what to do... Someone please help...!!!
just an update, took the rear diff cover off only to find things perfect... When to Ford and got a new diff cover, diff oil, and a new o-ring for the axle... Put it all back together and am now waiting for the new gasket to cure... Any ideas of how long I should wait before it is safe to add the synthetic oil and be able to drive? Also, I read in the manual that I should add some friction modifier to the oil to prevent gear noise??? Parts dept didnt say a thing other than to add the 75w-140... Knock on wood though, the old fluid that came out wasn't bad at all and there wasn't a single shaving anywhere... Again, knock on wood...
The Friction modifyer is used when you have a Limited-slip rear, to help the clutch pack in the center section slip easier,,,If you have a LS rear end,,fill with purchased oil,,,I would drive the truck first,,,before adding any Modifyer,,,if you hear/feel the truck chattering when making a turn,,,only add 2 oz of modifyer at a time and drive again,,to much modifyer,,and the clutchs will slip to much and basically have an Open Rear,,or Non LS!
