Oil Change

I'm about to change my oil for the first time since i've had my truck 5000 mi. just wondering what else besides the oil and filter i should check or change. i changed both fuel filters when i bought the truck. This is my first diesel so just checking. Thanks in advance, Rhine.

This is how I treat my truck...

Every 5k miles, new oil & oil filter (Racor PFL-2016)
Every 10k miles, new oil, oil filter & fuel filter (Navistar 1847170C94)

The oil you use is up to you, I'm a fan of Mystik 15W40 (80k+ miles trouble free); some guys like Rotella T6 or Valvoine Synthetic blue. As long as it meets CI-4 or CJ+ you'll be fine. FYI, there are two fuel filters...one in the HFCM (inside frame rail below driver's door) and the secondary on the engine. Change 'em both at the same time...and use clean motor oil on all o-rings when you change filters (fuel & oil filters).

I like to drain my water trap at each oil change. It's an easy way to remember to do it. FYI, changing the fuel filters does not drain the trapped water. You have to open the valve and drain it.

Add draining the water fuel seperator to your list of maintneance items. It's on the HFCM unit (the primary fuel filter housing on the frame rail).

That's okay! Nice shot of the aftermarket International brass plug. If the OP doesn't have that one, he will want that one.

Actually it's CI-4+ or CJ rating.

I noticed, but I'm not sure you can find anything that isn't at least CJ-4 anyway, so it isn't an issue.

I just pointed it out so that no one would be looking for CJ-4+ oil.

Fuel filters are to be changed between 10,000miles and 15,000miles. I change mine every 13,000.

After i got everything cleaned up and put the truck up i realized i messed up I looked in the oil drain and realized that i didn't put the copper washer back on is it ok to drive it like this for a day or two until i can get another quart of oil?? thanks again everybody!!

is it leaking?

on a different car. I forgot the washer, so I tightened the bolt, cleaned the oil off with brake clean, then put rtv on the bolt seem. That made a leak free seal until it was time to change the oil.

I always hit all the front zerk fittings I can find with grease. On my 2004, they are on all the tie rod ends and the front axle u-joints. Earlier models may have more, later models will have less.
