That's such a shame...hadn't raced since he won @ Indy this year. I wasn't watching...did you see what caused it?

Unbelievable. I just saw it on the ABC site. The youtube video is horrific. Steve, it looked like one of the cars in the front of the pack got a little loose after contact with another car. It slowed and the cars approaching from the rear didn't.....and they didn't really have anywhere to go nor did they really have any time to react.

Too tight on a mile and half running at 219..... no were to go when someone gets loose...that is what happened...a minor mistake at that speed is fatal.

A sad day for motorsports. Looking at the carnage I'm surprised there weren't additional fatalities or more serious injury to other drivers. Regardless, it doesn't make Dan's death any easier to handle. RIP Dan Wheldon.

If he had not gone airborne and the tub rotated to the right he would have survived, the top of the car went into he catch fence first.....amazing the cars did their job by shedding pieces and dissipating energy. Indy cars have come a long way ..they just need to stay on the ground when something goes horribly wrong

I'd pretty much stopped watching Indy car since the advent of 100% Honda spec power. It was unusual that I watched the last 10 laps of this year's Indy where he won & felt good for him doing so. I feel for his family (especially young children), friends & fans at his loss. It was indeed a horrible crash for all involved. It is however what happens from going 220 without a roof & cage over your head, regardless of the track.

It’s really sad to hear that a racer died on the track, it’s actually shows how risky these races really are, but I am sure they are going to make some amendments to avoid any future occurrence of something like this.
