I am looking for some advice on building a strong 460. Up to now all I have ever built are 289's and 302's. I want an engine with loads of torque. I was considering running pistons around 10:1 and a moderate lift cam, 280/.530. I have to replace the torque converter to run that cam. I have an MSD 6AL, ingnition, Pro Billet distributor, Moroso 11mm plug wires, Hooker headers and a Weiand Stealth intake. The heads are at the machine shop being match ported and the combustion chambers polished. I know with a small block you need lots of flow and I assume it is the same with a big block. Any advice on what piston and cam I should run to match my top end and still produce significant amounts of torque?
The limiting factor will be your heads. You didn't mention if they're the early rail rocker or pedestal rocker type. A port match and polishing the combustion chambers won't provide that much help. The exhaust port is severely compromised and will only flow about 135cfm, compared to 175-200 when ported.
For stock heads, I'd recommend a cam of no more lift than around .500/510, with duration of 210/220 @ .050. The increased duration on the exhaust side will help with the exhaust port.
Regarding pistons, they'll depend on which head you're using. Early heads ('68-71) have 75-78cc chambers while later, pedestal rocker chambers run 92-98cc.
It sounds like you are describing the engine I built last year. 460 running right at 10:1 P&P heads, CJ sized valves, Stealth intake, headers, Comp cam 218/226 @ 0.050 .514/.523, 750 carb. Mine has tons of torque down low. Running 3.25 gears with big tires it will smoke them starting off in second if you stall it. That's with a stck converter. No need to go with a higher stall unless you cam is at least two nothces bigger than mine. I can give full details including all parts, brand names etc, if desired. I haven't ran it through the quater mile yet, but by the seat of the pants it will take my '01 Lightning, especially the passing gear. Oh yeah, I am running pump gas on mine with no ping. Have to have everything just right though, A/F ratio, timing, plugs, etc.
