I have a 04 350, SD KR 4x4 right now I am getting ready to get a apare tank with tool box, I've heard that if you add a tank the total amount including the main tank can't be more than 80 gallons. If that's true, then I'll just get a 40 gallon which looking at the manuel I have a 38 gallon so 42 gallon whould reach the 80 total. Is there somewhere I can look online for the total to cross state lines with out getting a ticket?
Never heard that before but your state Vehicle code should have it in it example: in CA its the 'CVC'. I do know that transporting over a certain ammount requires you to have a Haz-Mat endorsement, and must be properly placarded. the ammount does vary state to state I forget what it is for CA though. and do not know if it applies to a fuel supply verse transporting over 80 Gallons.
also be sure if your using a "fuel cell" that it is legal in your state. CA it is illegal to add a "fuel cell" to your vehicle, but its a gray area when you use an OEM tank, of a simular model with the option. check you local, and state regs.... if you have any doubt or dont wanna look it up (it can be a pain) just stop by a weight station or check with your state patrol/trooper they will tell you right off the bat. LE will be your best refrence!
I've never heard of a limit to the amount of fuel you can have on/in your truck/car. Now the DOT does have a threshold at which you'll need a HazMat endorsement; 500 gallons was what it was in the late '90s when I got my CDL-A. I went and did a little "google-ing" trying to see if I could find anything that listed a specific gallon quantity...but I didn't find anything right away. I did find some interesting reading, that maybe some what helpful....granted TransFlow is tooting their own horn.
I second the idea of stopping by a DOT weigh/inspection station and ask. Believe me, they'd rather you ask than end up as a statistic on the side of the highway.
I have a 91 gallon rds tank installed in my truck now. easy install too. the tanks can be bought at northen tool for less than aly place I found.
IIRC the max amount of fuel you can carry beyond state lines is 85 gallons. in state use I dont know of any limit.
so just because you have the capicity to haul more doent mean you have to be 100% maxxed out. so If you only fill to 85 gallons you should be good but IANAL so tdo your own research on IFTA rules.
next dot says you can not directly feed an carb or injecotr with fuel. I took this to mean that you have to basicly feed the system pre fuel pump.

As long as he's using his F350 for personal uses (commuting, pulling your boat/horse/rv/ATV trailer); only has the stock two axles and is under 26k pounds...he's exempt from IFTA.
I had to stress the part about it has to be your trailer, if you pulling a trailer for someone else at a profit (charging a fee to move it) then your getting into the commercial side of trucks. Also, as long as you stay under 26k pounds, don't use air brakes (truck or trailer) and aren't carrying HazMat at a reportable quantity you won't need a CDL either. I'd still stop by your local NCDOT or state trooper HQ and ask questions. Even if you've already installed the tank...as long as there isn't any fuel in it your safe.

reps to you for getting the ifta info save me some worry too.
I've got a 97 gallon RDS tank/toolbox ported to my main tank(38) gallons. Removed the RDS tool box and mounted a 35 gasoline tank. The gas tank is used for quads, toy hauler generator, etc. Got a buddy here in AZ who is an AZ DPS officer (state police) who says in AZ that there is no problem if it is for personal use. Commercial service is another set of regs.
I've had no problems and don't expect to. My $0.02 worth.
