My 73 f250 360 ALWAYS runs cold (i'm talking 120 tops) I realize its still fairly cold here (Ca- maybe 65 in afternoon) But no matter what stress load I put the truck under its is cold. This is a new mechanical gauge and new thermostat. (both tested and working properly). I haven't cracked the pump open yet. but it appears to be functioning properly ie. no squeal/play/leakage. What do you think is going on. Should I be concerned, or just be happen that when the summer months come I'll be running cold. The truck also has the giant radiator for trucks w/ ac.
i have the same problem with my car. it runs about 130-140. five or six thermostats, no thermostat, it runs same temp. sucks when its cold- no heat when its below freezing! its a convertable with the top about half torn up so even if the heatr worked good it still would be cold. blocking the radiator completly doesnt even help. i have bubbles in the coolant when it runs- i think if i put a head gasket on it that will fix my problem.
What thermostat are you running in your truck, alot of the old FE blocks seem to have 160 thermostats in them. If your trying to get it to run hotter, put a higher temp thermostat in there, removing your thermostat will only make it run even cooler since it will have totally unrestricted flow. A good 180 or above thermostat is at least what you want. Engines when running below a certain temperature - which is around 170 something odd degrees, the inside of the engine doesnt burn hot enough, so you start to get some buildup on the cylinder walls, and would normally not occur with an engine that was operating properly.
Well its summer now and since it is no longer 65deg. outside, and more like 105, my truck has warmed up for me. Still never goes above the 180 dictated by the thermostat, even sitting still midday with the ac on. But thats okay by me. I think I'll just wait to worry about this issue until its an issue again in the cold. At this point I have a carb/ignition swap staring at me from the workbench every morning, so I'm gonna go on that first...
