New alt has 5 studs on the rear. BAT, STA, FLD, GRD, and an empty one. BAT has red plastic, FLD has orange, and STA has black. The harness that came off was just a orange push on style connector, and a black wire with connector. I'm assuming orange goes to FLD and the black goes to GRD. am I correct?
The BAT stud should be the largest and goes to the battery side of the starter solenoid through a fusible link. The FLD stud goes to the F terminal of your voltage regulator.
If you have an ALT light in the dash, then the STA stud goes to the S terminal of your voltage regulator. If you have an ammeter gauge instead, then the STA stud does NOT go to the voltage regulator. If you have a factory electric-assisted choke, then the STA stud also goes to the electric choke heater.
The GRD stud is typically optional since the alternator grounds through its mounting bolts, but it's a good idea to run the GRD stud back to one of the voltage regulator mounting bolts.
No idea what the empty stud would be for. I know I haven't answered your questions directly (in terms of wire color), but this is how the system gets hooked up, and you should be able to cross reference your colors with what I have said either visually, or with a multimeter (continuity check).
Ok yeah all I have is a black wire and an orange wire, the black has a eye connector with a built in star washer, and the hole fits on the larger battery stud. I'm thinking that one goes on the battery and the orange goes on the FLD, and it's already grounded through the bolt.
