I just ordered the trailer brake harness from ford for my 2001 Excursion. My question is this, do I need to install an additional fuse for the brakes in the fuse box or did Ford already intall one? Where and how would I check? Thanks
If the truck came with the factory tow package, you have all the fuses/relays that you need.
Does it have the factory hitch and the factory plug at the tail? If yes, then it has the factory tow package. If no, the the dealer can tell you what fuses/relays that you need and where they go in the fuse box. The owners manual also has this information.
The owner's manual doesn't say where to plug in the harness for an electric brake controller. I bought the factory manuals from Helm Publishing, and it tells where the plug is located, and its connector number.
But I'm not overly impressed with Ford's manuals. I found its wiring diagram and description for the trailer socket (beside the hitch receiver) to be all hosed up. Granted, the receptacle IS wired correctly when compared to trailer-industry standards, but the Ford manual shows something different.
I found this problem when I couldn't get all my trailer lights to work. Turned out it was just a blown fuse in the electrical box under the hood near the master brake cylinder.
