Thanks...I was led to believe that you should change the housing everytime you change the T-stat
Not necessary unless it is beyond cleaning up. I just clean it up and put a coat of Rustoleum on the outside. Be sure to use an OEM o-ring for a leak free install, not that some aftermarket o-rings won't work. The cross-section of some aftermarket o-rings are slightly smaller in height and don't always seal properly. 15 ft/lbs on those three small bolts. I've never had to use any sealer for leak free install with proper size o-ring.
Or you can do like I did....OEM O-ring, Original housing and a little bit of black RTV. When I was done I fired it up and dared it to leak....it didn't.
I probably should have painted the housing before re-installing. I cleaned up the mating surfaces but just left the rust oxide coating alone. We hardly ever see any rust down here so I thought it looked kinda cool to have a little bit of rust somewhere on the truck....
No you don't have to change the housing every time. Only when or if it leaks. Dieselsite sells the billet housing, or the other option would be to go with a flange ring with longer bolts. Dennis sells these as wells as a few other vendors. T-Stat Housing Ring
I'm still running my factory housing. I pull it every 100k when I flush my coolant. I'll put money on my OEM one making it to at least 400,000 miles (only 20k to go).

I actually JUST got done installing the one from Dieselsite, and it is very much worth the money. The stock one is very thin, and mine was VERY rusted.
Right off the strictly diesel site "The factory housing will flex when tightened down unevenly". All you have to do is tighten it evenly and with the proper o-ring no leaks.
