Source for 1-ton wheels
Source for 1-ton wheels
I recently purchased a 1947 1-ton, and the previous owner had cut the centers out of the front wheels and had them welded (rather crudely) into some 16" rims. Since the other three wheels are still the stock 17" split tims, I'd like to replace the fronts with the same.
Does anyone know of a source for these wheels, or is anyone looking to get rid of their stock wheels?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Brad

I'm checking with a friend that might know where to find some of the '47 and under tonner wheels. These wheels are unique to these trucks because they have the 5 lug x 6 7/8" bolt pattern. If you find some make sure that they have their rings complete with the rims. There were two wheel width options on these trucks and the rings are different on each. Not interchangeable. Stu
Thanks Stu, I appreciate the help. That's a good tip on making sure the rings match the rims too. I'll keep that in mind.
Parts for these things are hard enough to find up here, let alone some of the weirder 1-ton specific things... It's good to have this resource available...

sorry it has taken a while for me to check in. Stu sent me a text and told me you were looking, but i totally spaced it off till tonight. i am gonna need a pic or wheel number for what you are looking for. what year etc. if Stu knows i can just ask him. if i read it right you need a 47 one ton 17in. wheel in 5x6 7/8 bolt pattern. a wheel number would be helpfull. how wide?
They're 17x6", 5 on 6 7/8", split rim. I'll have to look up the part number when I get home. I've got 3 of 5, the other two were cut apart to make 16" rims for the front wheels... I'll get back to you as soon as I'm back in front of the truck. Thanks a bunch for the help!
Mark - Any of the "jail bar" one tons will have these when you go back out to your "secret" yard. If you need a pic I can probably find you one, but the best is to go by the Budd numbers. Like I said above, all are 17" with 5 lug x 6 7/8" pattern. The two widths were CALLED 5" and 6" using the old NWRA measurement standard which measured across the outer rim lips. When using the current measurement standard the ACTUAL widths are 3.75" and 4.33" down inside across the inner wheel base.
My 1942 Budd listing shows the numbers to be #41620 for the 5" (3.75") and #41470 for the 6" (4.33"). The numbers then changed for some reason. Both 1944 and 1947 Budd listings show the numbers to be #44620 for the 5" (3.75") and #44630 for the 6" (4.33"). The numbers should be stamped on the back rim lip, generally opposite the valve stem, same as you've found on other wheels we've talked about.
Both width wheels used the Firestone "RH" solid/continuous rings, but the rings of the two widths have different part numbers. That's why keeping the rim/ring together as a set is important. Stu

penny, i dont have the wheels, i might have a source for the wheels. i may be able to get the drums to but i couldnt say that they would be in spec. you cant afford to have me out at the yard all day checking brake drums to see if they are in spec. if they just need to be round and not cracked, i could probably find those.
i wouldnt know were to begin with converting to disc. the next time i am out there i will ask if he has some and what he would want for them. if they are easy to get at i could measure a few if i knew what the specs were.
