Fix your glow plugs!! They are for starting.

Fuel heater is to help keep the fuel flowing in low temps in the winter. Not saying you don't need one as well, but its not going to fix your starting problems.

I have not had the inline or any fuel heater for 3-4 years now, but don't expect the '83 to start with out glow plugs.

I have a fuel heater, but don't have it hooked up. Hasn't been an issue. Actually I have the both the 6.9 heater and the 7.3 heater on my truck and neither are hooked up.

You do not need the pem fuel heater at all!! It never works right and serves zero purpose! All you need is 8 good working Motorcraft glow plugs and you are set!!

Did you try searching through the forum? I seem to remember people posting a few links not that long ago.

Mine inline heater was broken when we got it and the last owner installed a 7.3 head which wasn't hooked up either.

Only limited experience I have in the cold with these diesels is in the snow/rain when it gets into the teens. Truck still fires the same but definately is louder with the advance on so I walk away and let it warm up a few minutes then drive off.
