temp to start cooling?

i just got an thermostat for an electric fan that i got from a 92 mercury tracer. At what temp should i have the fan kick in? What temp is the stock thermostat for a 351w? How can i tell if i have the heavy-duty cooling package? The fan has also 2 speeds, which would be better, was high speed for when the a/c started?

Do you mean that you have the fan and the thermostat from the Tracer?

It wouldn't be hard to find the temp for the thermostat for your motor. I don't have the book, but a quick visit to a autosupply (even walmart) would tell you the temp you are supposed to have.

I don't think that the stock fan from the Tracer is going to be enough to keep your engine cool. If you have AC and any other heavy duty packages on your truck, then you may have the heavy duty radiator package. I would think that you would need a pusher fan on the front and a puller on the backside if you don't have a double fan puller.

i have the fan from the tracer and i bought an aftermarket thermostat to control it. i dont have a/c and i dont know if it has the heavy-duty package (third owner). i could also wire the fan on high speed instead of low. i could also add another fan from an 86 cavilier to the back of the rad with the one from the tracer. i think the stock thermostat temp is 195*, should i start the fan around 210-220*?

I would wire the fan to come on high power and set the thermostat at 195, which sounds about right for your 351. Setting the fan on high power may make it cycle a bit but it will run for shorter periods of time and you will not run the risk of getting behind the cooling.

Installing the second fan sounds good to me.

scrap the second fan idea, it wont fit unless some custom shroud is made. also wouldnt you want the fan to come on like 10-20* above the engine thermostat temp? cause on one of my cars, the stat is at 195* and the fans come on at 220*

You may be right 84-250. I was thinking that if the engine thermostat opened at 195, it may take a minute or two before the radiator hits 195. Setting the rad thermostat at 205 makes more sense to me then setting it at 220, but I don't disagree with your findings.

The second fan would have to be mounted on the front, one as a pusher and the other as a puller. Still, it might be tough to install the front one.
