Hi all!
I see the x-plan pricing calculation mentioned as this:
Dealer Invoice - 0.4% of Invoice + $275 Administration Fee
However, when I build an F150 using my x-plan link, I get the x-plan price as $37,880 (see configuration below). Edmunds says the invoice for the same truck is $37,073. That means the X-plan price is $807 above invoice. Does that make any sense? I did this exercise with the 2011 MY because the 2012's numbers are not officially out there yet just to compare x-plan to invoice pricing.
Also, what are dealers allowed to add above and beyond the x-plan price?
Thanks a lot for any help!
Here is the configuration I used: - 2011 F-150 4WD SuperCrew 157"XLT- 3.73 LS - 3.5L V6 ECOBOOST ENGINE - XLT CONVENIENCE PKG - XLT PLUS PKG - Max Trailer Tow PKG - XLT CONVENIENCE & TOW DISCOUNT - REAR VIEW CAMERA (REQ: 61P XLT Plus Pkg)
Actually that sounds about right or close to it, the dealership really doesn't make any money when it comes to selling vehicles under the X plan, the main goal is just to make and keep the customer happy, other than what you have already listed there really isnt anything else they can charge for, now if you purchase extra protection for the veh such as 1st place finish, ext warr, maint plan, or anything like that then you pay for that because those are extra and not included in the invoice
So with $800 over invoice, the "Dealer Invoice - 0.4% of Invoice + $275 Administration Fee" equation is not really true? That's the main thing I wanted to check.
I bought my 09 Platinum using the X_Plan and got a good deal at the time, but I just bought a Lincoln at the same Ford dealer and used a quote from AOL Autos to get a price better than the X-Plan would have given me. The salesman showed me the invoice with the A, D, and X plan prices. X was the worst of the three and just under invoice.
I went to AOL Autos Best Deal Program – No Haggle Prices for New Cars and built the Truck you did and got these numbers: Standard Equipment:
Order Code 507A
157" Wheelbase
Monotone Paint Application
Optional Equipment:
Max Trailer Tow Package - Power Mirror $940 MSRP | $780 Invoice
XLT Plus Package $495 MSRP | $411 Invoice
XLT Convenience Package $200 MSRP | $166 Invoice
Engine: 3.5L V6 EcoBoost $750 MSRP | $623 Invoice
Limited Slip w/3.73 Axle Ratio $400 MSRP | $332 Invoice
The AOL Autos Best Deal price is $31,004 - which does not include mfrs destination fee: $995
MSRP: $39,610
Savings off MSRP: $8,606
Invoice: $35,704
Market Price: $35,272
So if I bought this at my dealer, I'd pay $31,004 + 995 + $549 (Admin Fee)
I didn't see the package discount you listed.
This may or may not be available in you zip code. It worked for me and I got my new Lincoln Towncar for about $1550 below invoice.
It used to be that you didn't have to pay the dealer's administration fees with the X-Plan. Be sure to ask about that. It saved me $249 two years ago. Now it's up to $549.
I built an F350 on TrueCar and it gave me an invoice price of around $49500. When I received the SmartVincent printout from the dealer, the invoice price was closer to $51000. I think the systems Truecar and Edmunds use are just moderate estimates of the real invoice price.
When I bought my '11 in June, I had my x-plan pin all printed out with some other info for the dealer.
Doc fees are capped at $75.00. The dealer may try and charge you more and he will if you allow him to.
Dealer transfer fees (DX) are negated by x-plan and you pay nothing for that service if the dealer does not have your specific requirements in stock.
Your trade-in is fair game for negotiation as well as dealer added items such as warranties, protection plans, etc.
As per the rules of x-plan, once you've announced that you are using x-plan, all negotiations on the new vehicle are supposed to cease.
I negotiated first before involving my x-plan and got a better deal overall and I paid nothing in doc fees.
One of our many local dealers is a one price dealer and everything is priced to meet x-plan, so there is some money to be made. Additionally, when using x-plan, Ford pays the dealer a small commission.
If the dealers lot is still loaded with 2011's and a 2012 arrives, x-plan may be the best deal on the 2012.
I just used X Plan on my new 2011 F150 SCrew with EB. I then saved another $4750 on top of that with incentives. Be sure to check and make sure the dealer understands how XPlan works and that the max admin fee is now up to $100. I had a great experience with using the XPlan and with the dealer I used.
Under X-plan rules you can forfeit your right to use the X-plan if you don't let them know immediately that you plan on using it. Tim's dealer was nice and allowed that, but if they didn't want to deal they could have said no to X-plan or just gave him the X-plan price.
Thanks everybody!
I think I am starting to understand this. It looks like the invoices published at places like kbb & Edmunds.com are a few hundred bucks lower than the invoices at the dealer. That would explain my $800 over invoice calculation.

Edo, something does not add up I think with our comparison. Which cab style & wheel base did you use? I think you may be missing the camera as well. The real MSRP for the config I tried is $41,055 (inc. destination charge; this is the one number that agrees everywhere exactly: ford.com, edmunds, kbb, Chrome Carbook). I am sure AOL also includes incentives, right? I am trying to avoid that in my comparison as the 2012 incentives are not out yet.
I hate car shopping!
You're right, I missed the camera at $450 (thought it was part of the Plus Package). The new AOL numbers for MSRP and Invoice are the same as your numbers if you add in the $995 Destination charges.
AOL Price $31,378
MSRP: $40,060
Savings off MSRP: $8,682
Invoice: $36,078
Market Price: $35,637
The AOL price includes incentives, which I believe are $3000 right now. That puts it at $750 under invoice.
I can't see how the X-Plan price you get is below invoice.
Edo, if one assumes $3,000 in incentives, then the AOL price you are listing is $1,700 under invoice. That's a pretty sweet deal, but it's a 2011 unfortunately. :-(
You are supposed to tell the dealer that you are using a X-plan PIN.
Three years ago the paper fee was fixed at $75.00.
The price is on the invoice. NO Negotiation.
Price + Paper + TTL = $your cost.
I found the truck then went inside to buy.
I bought off the lot.
Don't let them put in a plastic bedliner.
Don't let them undercoat the truck.
If they installed options that is a problem.
Negotiate their cost.
Remember you did not ask them to mod the truck.
The dealer took a chance that the options would enhance the saleability of the vehicle.
If it was not on the original invoice it's negotiable.
I was able today to get a dealer to do better than xplan. The started at invoice (which is lower than X-Plan). I had my PIN and everything, he didn't care, out the door with TTL for $7000 below MSRP.
