Im gettin a 95 f350 quad cab long box with a 5 or 6" suspension and 3" body lift its got pretty dull 35s on it. The heart of this truck is a 351w... need i say more? Ive been stuck between lookin for a 390 or a 460. Its gonna be a daily driver but it just needs more power. I wanna be able to drive through the mountains and stuff also and be able to pull a trailor up ther. I dont want anything over the top. Just a good daily driver with a good amount of power. Im pretty solid on one of these motors till i can save up for a diesle. Any suggestions?
I had a 74 1/2 ton with a 460 in it.It would get 10 mpg uphill,downhill,you name it.and I could pull a house uphill against the wind any time I wanted.
Ive heard also to not even worry about puttin a big block in it and just save for a diesle but this truck needs more power and the 351 just isnt cuttin it. Its my cousins truck right now so i know how it runs and everything. How hard and costly is it to convert to a 460? And would the transfercase bolt up or would i have to swap that as well.
A LOT of power can be made with a 351. Probably cheaper/easier than putting a 460 in there. Also, there are a lot more aftermarket parts out there that fit a 351. Pull it out, bore it .30 over and make it a 408 stroker and make all the kiddies with their big blocks cry.
D.S.S. Rotating kit one option D.S.S. Rotating kit And another.
Overall it will cost you about 4K when all is said and done if you have someone else do the work. If you pull it and do the work yourself the only extra costs you will incur is seals, water pump/oil pump if it needs it, and machine work. Fluids too obviously, but this is the route I would take. And since it is a 95 you already have a maf setup! Might as well get the heads ported and a good cam while you have it torn down.

408 is Perfect, a lot less work and cheaper too Great Idea
are the gears in the axles stock? that would be a good place to start if they are. that 351 wouldn't do bad if the gearing was correct for the tire size!!
The 390 is a great truck engine and I can see why it would be an option for you. I ran them in a couple of pickups and, in 391 FT form, in a couple of HD trucks. But I think I would have to side with most other folks here and say it's not the most practical swap for a 95. Also, I have an EFI 460 in my 97 and love it. Though there are some changes I would/am make to it I am more than happy with its towing/hauling and unloaded performance. But again, if you're planning an oil burner swap in the future then it's a big job and expense just to go and rip it all out again later. I do like the stroker options that have been suggested by everyone else. If your engine is tired then for just a few bucks more than a standard rebuild you can increase the stroke and in turn greatly increase the torque. If you're going to do the work this is the way to go. Plus you can get even more power with a homemade turbo or centrifugal supercharger.
And after you do this you may not want a diesel. As many advantages that the oil burners may have, it's a costly swap that will require a ton of other parts other than a motor, and then you will still have to deal with the increased maintenance, weight, and operating oddities that come with a diesel. If you want a smoker then sell you truck and get one that already has one in it. I say stick with the gasser, rebuild it with a stroker crank, reinforced bottom end and a good topend, and have fun "smoking" the diesel guys while they pay more for fuel and oil changes.
You wouldn't believe the amount of power you can get out of a 351w just by changing the heads and intake (elderdrock truck intake). Looking at about $1500, but got from 210hp to around 350-380 hp, and lots or torque.
strokin it would also give you more power as previously stated. 383, 396, 408, ect.

Between the two, 460. For a daily driver, though, I'd follow their advice and stroke the 351. Lots more parts available for that than the 460 because of the mustang crowd.
really the only downsides to the 460 (IMO) are mileage (for daily driver, this is big) and relative lack of performance parts. However, I have a 96 460 f350 and love the **** out of it, so it's hard for me to really recommend against it
