The test strips cost less than $100 and you can do do the check yourself. As noted already, the message is not a warning that something is wrong but rather a reminder. So the dealer wants you to pay for a complete kit plus service fee for one check?!
$200 for fuel filters?! You can easily change these yourself easily in under 5 minutes for about $100.
It's not the 6.7 costing you too much $$$ it is your dealer.
In my "Diesel Supplement" manual it clearly states that strips are not recommended (page 47)
See the extract from the manual:
Note:
For best results, coolant concentration should be tested with a
refractometer such as Rotunda tool ROB75240 available from your
dealer. Ford does not recommend the use of hydrometers or coolant test
strips for measuring coolant concentrations.
yea i saw that today too. I called my dealer and they said.."yea we need to take the test strips to it and check it. Bring it in whenever you get a chance. Wont take long." I wonder if they are going to charge me for it or not. Either way ill take it in to see what its all about.
You still have to use the test strips do do a full test, you are not just checking for freezing resistance. If you do a search of the threads here, you can get the part numbers for teh test kit. There are actually two parts to the test kits, you check both coolant systems also.
My selling dealer has checked mine twice for free. Once at approx. 13,000 miles and again at 26,000 miles. That's the reason I make sure and stop in and visit the Serv. Mgr. periodically and let him see me buying filters, oil, fuel additive, etc. It's a relationship building process I employ and I feel it pays off - sometimes. Hopefully when it matters most. I do the same thing with my ATV dealer. I buy all my parts and service items thru him and he cuts me some slack from time to time on major repairs.
I was going to check in on this. Took my truck by the dealer today. They checked the coolant with the strips and verified the level. They said everything was good and turned the check light off. Didnt charge a thing. I tried to pay them for the strips but they said no charge and have a good day.
Hopefully all other dealers will do the same for everyone.
That's great that they will check for free, saves you cash for the kits and the time. Unfortunately not all dealers will do that for their customers. I haven't checked mine yet...
