Cooper Discoverer AT3 - Anyone else having balancing problems???
275/70/r18 load range E, on Stock 2011 Lariat wheels.
I am on my second set of Cooper tires. The first set (Discoverer ATR) kept losing balance. Cooper was very accomodating and replaced them with four new AT3's. Well, these are getting out of balance as well. Going back into the shop Monday for the third time to see where the numbers fall in comparison to the last Road Force Balance. After that, back on the horn with Cooper. What the........???
Has anyone else had similar experience with Cooper, or other tires that would not stay balanced? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I don't currently have any cooper tires but the last set I had was absolutely awesome, no balancing problems what-so-ever and they wore like iron. I can't wait to put a set on my superduty.
just put on a new set yesterday discoverer AT3 285-75-16 on my 04 f250 crew had a heck of time getting them to balance 25 ounce's of weight on the first tire,18,15 & 21 on the other three that is a lot of weight to balance a tire. i only put 30 miles on them so far i must say i like them a lot over the micky thompson tires i replaced. i hope i do not have any more balancing problems.
At least your Cooper tires are not cracking at the sidewalls like 8 of mine did in less than 6 months. That said every tire company is going to have bad runs of tires at one point. Cooper makes a lot of different tires under a lot of different brands so there are going to be a lot of good and bad tires out there. I never had tires with balance issues, just other issues. When you take it in again I'd be interested to hear how far out of balance they are. Maybe try another brand or different Cooper tire, maybe the S/T Maxx? The S/Ts on my truck took a bit of weight to balance but not an excessive amount. I don't recommend the S/Ts though because the tread is squirmy and rolls rough, was a lack of options at the time.
It might not be the tires. I had my tires replaced last spring with a set of Michelins. I left the tire store and within 5 miles realized the tires were not balanced correctly. I went back and spoke to the tech that performed the work. I don't remember exactly what he told me now but it has to do with the style of the wheel on the Superdutys and the way they mount on the truck. There is a special adapter that they use when mounting the tire and wheel assembly on the balancing machine. He said sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. Fortunately he had a lot of experience and seemed to know what was wrong right away. I want to say he balanced them the second time around without using the adapter (against his bosses advice) and they balanced perfectly. He won a free lunch from his boss. Not positive this advice will solve your problem but might be worth looking into. Good Luck.
I've been running the Cooper AT3 in LT285-75-16 on my F-350 dually for about 4000 miles and absolutly love them. They are very smooth and quiet. I had previously ran two sets of Cooper ATR (same size) for the life of the truck, (88000). These were good long life tires but became very noisy and rough running when they started to wear. My local shop has done a great job balancing them ( with minimal weight). The only problem was with one of the ATR's on my other F-350, an FX-4 where I had a belt separate and the dealer replaced it free. Overall, very happy with Coopers, hope your dealer fixs your problem.
I have a set of Cooper Discoverer ATR with about 4,000 miles and no sign of any problems. Last trip was coming back from Wyoming doing 80 mph with the tires and no problems. This in on my 2005 superduty.
Any tire requiring that much weight to balance is a factory defect. Not all tire shops are the same , and I favor one which uses a very nice spin balancer besides a rim clamp tire machine. To use it correctly, you need to program the diameter and width of the rim into it. It uses the center hub with a tapered insert to mount on the machine. They even asked me about stick on weights or pound on ones. Did you check to make sure they didnt put water in the tire when inflating because they havent maintained their air compressor?
Well, the vibration issue continued with the second set of Coopers and several attempts to re-balance. The dealership persuaded me into a different tire, so I switched to Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour. The ride improved, but guess what?.....I still have a vibration at freeway speeds (70 mph). It feels like it is in the back, but I am not certain. The dealership swapped a set of wheels from another 2011 on the lot with Michellan tires on it and claim there was no more vibration. Of course they could not leave them on long enough for me to test drive because they sold the truck. They are suggesting that I change tires.....AGAIN...and go with the Michellans. This is ridiculous! Three sets of tires....none of them aggressive, in my opinion.
What else should I be looking for as a source of this vibration? Like I said, I think it is coming from the rear. I feel the vibration mainly in the seat.
I need help guys! I have been dinking around with this for the better part of a year! Very frustrating!!!
I have the COOPER DISCOVERY AT3's, as soon as I hit 70mph I get a vibration- identical problem.
I have the same EXACT problem with the SAME EXACT tires, I posted a few days back in regards to this issue. The truck is currently at the dealer, they just called and advised that nothing is wrong with the RIMS conflicting what the TIRE RACK in Farmingdale NJ advised me of (they were saying 3 of the rims were bent). I had 0 vibration with the stock tires. They are now sticking a different set of tires and rims on the truck from another a new truck on the lot and then test driving it.
I just put a set of 285/75R16 Cooper Discoverer A/T3's on 2 weeks ago, and no problems. They took anywhere from 1-6 ounces of weight to balance them, but I've had it up to 75 MPH, and no shaking. 6 ounces of weight on a tire of that size & weight is not really much. They're a little noisier that my old Firestone Steeltex A/T's, but it's not objectionable.
Dealer just called and said they resolved the problem and in fact the issue rises from the method used to balance the tires. He also noted that originally the tires had 6 ounces of weight on them which he felt was too much... He now was able to balance everything with no more than 3 ounces. I will get additional details once I pick the truck up, hopefully the problem is really fixed.
