I did a serach here and it seems the 2002 3.0 Ranger has a rev limiter? I had to push in the clutch and brake to avoid hitting a bonehead in my lane the other night while using cruise control and the motor revved well past 5K rpm. Will hitting the rev limiter turn on the 'check engine' light, I noticed it came on yesterday, I already have a servivce appointment. Thanks!
Mikemc, I don't know alot about that, however, I wouldn't doubt that hitting the limiter WOULD cause the CEL to come on. After all, when you hit the limiter, combustion ceases, but as far as I know, injection doesn't. So sensors would have detected raw fuel, and, a lack of ignition. Curious to hear from someone who REALLY knows.
You would think that a rev limiter in a fuel injected engine WOULD INDEED be a fuel cut-off. After all, it would be so easy to do. But, not sure that they all are. Carbureted ones weren't fuel cut-off, for obvious reasons. I think that early FI's also weren't fuel cut-offs, but I am not highly educated on the subject. Would like to hear from someone who knows for sure. If I can find time, I'll do a little research also.
Did you hit the brake right away, or just the clutch? I had a '90 SHO, and the one time I tried to shut off the cruise with just the clutch pedal the revs went way up. Apparently, the shutoff doesn't engage quite fast enough to prevent a second or two of throttle with the clutch engaged. So you get high rpms until the computer catches up.
As to the check engine light problem, I have no idea.
Thanks for the replies. I took the truck to my service dealer Wednesday and the they pulled the codes, the engine light was caused by a faulty vapor management valve which is being replaced tomorrow. The owners manual states that it is normal for the engine rpm's to flare when pushing in the clutch to disengage the cruise, so I guess they are counting on the rev limiter to protect the motor.
speaking of rev limiters anyone know what the limit on a 2003 4.0 4x4 is... not that im ever going to find out for myself, but it would be good to know
