Mike I just got home from work, and started a couple beers. So take me through this slowly. Do I do this while the PVH solenoid is plugged in or do I check with it unplugged? Do I check both outside contacts at the same time?
You leave the three wire connector plugged into the solenoid. Get yourself a jumper wire that you can insert into the back side of the three wire connector (without damaging it of course), and jump each of the outer wires to the passenger side battery negative post with the key in the RUN position. DO NOT jump the middle wire (that is the fused B+ to the solenoid). You should hear strong clicks from the solenoid as you're doing this.
Anyone know what the two relays do, located on the driver side under hood right next to the batteries? The manual says it is for the ESOF. Thats it. Says nothing else.
Checked the PVH wires. The forward one clicks the solinoid but the back one (red does not). What's my problem?
If you've verified you have B+ to the middle wire with the ignition key in the RUN position (light blue with pink stripe), the next step is to replace the PVH solenoid.

Those are your 4x4 HI-TO-LO and 4x4 LO-TO-HI relays.
Hope someone can respond some what quickly. I just did the solenoid test again - this time with an actual circuit tester that could pierce the insulation on the wire. The grey/black stripe wire (call it wire #1) closest to the battery kicked the vacuum pump on. The red wire (wire #3) furthest from the battery didn't produce anything (clicks or anything). And as recommended I didn't touch the middle wire (wire #2).
Is it safe to assume that this test means the solenoid is bad? Your quick response is appreciated as I am about to call the Ford parts dept and see if they have one in stock.
Sorry for the double post in another thread but went ahead and rolled the dice and the $'s since my local dealer had the solenoid in stock. JACKPOT - Problem gone and everything working as it's supposed to!
