So im am looking into do a full restoration on my 56' f100 that use to be my dads. It is a V8 272(light duty) and my grandpa owned it since 56' and then my dad got it in mid 60's. It has been sitting for a good 20-30 years, but before my dad garaged it it was recently rebuilt and had all new wiring ran. I am making a list of things to do to start her up again and was looking for some help/advise. Here is what i have so far...
1) Check Generator (How often do these go bad? Looking at alternators if done for.)
2) Drop oil pan and give cleaning, and then do an oil change.
3) Pull gas tank and drain and clean tank as well as pump.
4) Pull carb and clean/rebuild (I know these needed regular cleaning back in the day)
5) Check plugs and wires (Should i just change them anyway?)

Anything else needed for attempted start up?
before any of the above, pull plugs
squirt some tranny fluid into the cylinders thru the spark plug hole.
with plugs out, turn engine by hand..
add on to the list,
check & change hoses and belts for radiator/heat.
drain & replace engine coolant.
Generators last a long time. Bearings and brushes are maint items. Alternators are ugly.
Replace any rubber fuel line.
Replace any soft coolant hoses.
Be prepared to replace the points.
If it has not been converted, get a spin on oil filter adapter kit and install while you have the pan down. If you're doing a correct restoration, forget the kit.
Welcome. I'll second all of the above. So, is it going to be restored, or resto-mod? By the way, PICTURES, WE ALWAYS WANT PICTURES.....isn't there a list of rules somewhere, and isn't number 1 something like where are you from....number 2, isn't that POST THE DANGED PICTURES.....just kidding, firgured I'd get the post the pictures statement first this time.....

Looks like you were first this time Joe. But I think you got the order wrong. It's #1 Pictures, #2 where are you from.
By the way Welcome to FTE. Great site, great folk, great opinions (usually) and people that really know their stuff.

I am doing i guess a resto-mod.. I want to keep everything as stock as possible, besides ill be upgrading the front brakes to discs instead of drums for the safety factor, rewiring for an aftermarket radio(Keeping old radio in the truck), and lowering a bit, and lastly ill have two sets of wheels. The original ones i have, and then some nice custom chrome ones. Definitly taking the spare tire mount off since i do not like it at all. Oh ya forgot to tell you all it has the wrap around rear window as well!!!

As far as pictures go i will post some up once i pull it out of my side garage and move it to my main garage..
The stock suspension, and braking system is perfectly safe for one of these trucks. The only safety concern, is that they don't have a dual circuit braking system. Converting to disk brakes is only a marginal improvment, since the trucks weren't designed to travel at modern highway speeds, and are not as heavy as most vehicles now days. The only real gain with disks, is that they do not suffer the loss of use when soaked like drums do, and they do not hold as much heat, but heat is not an issue when one knows proper driving techniques.
