I have a 93 explorer xlt 4.0. This only happens to me once in a while when I come to a full stop. I will be sitting at a red light and out of no where the idle will starting pulsing like if I was tapping the gas pedal. Then it will either stall and I would have to start it again or it will run like crap and then out of no where it would just start running normal again. Can anyone tell me what is going on?
I think you have some diagnosing to do before anyone can tell you what's going on, but here are some ideas for directions to go.
The idle speed is controlled by the computer using the idle air control valve. Sometimes it gets dirty.
A/C can affect the idle, is the A/C on or off when it has trouble idling?
Problems with the EEC sensors could show up as a bad idle. Perform EEC self-test to see if the computer can see any problems. (Instructions here )
Fuel delivery could be a problem. Perform fuel pressure test.
A vacuum leak could create a bad idle.
Mass air flow sensors can get dirty, but they can be cleaned.
What's the status of any tune-up items? (spark plugs, wires)

I had the same problem a while back with my 97 EB - they replaced the Mass Airflow Sensor for a cool $500 CDN. Truck still ran like crap - escpecially when it was cold. Ended up being a vacuum leak around the intake manifold gasket. ...or so I'm told. Runs like new, now.

I had a similar problem also with a 93 Ford Explorer Autoamtic but it would do it just after a warm start-up, sitting at idle. It turned out to be a faulty Idle Air Controller and now it idles great. I had tried cleaning the MAF, throttle body, everything and nothing had helped.
