My 54 F100 still has the original rims, with 6.00-16 tires. I would like to update the tires to 70 or 75R16s; the tire place tells me that the rims can only take 6.00-16s. I don't really want these since I'm not thrilled with the look, they need to have tubes, and I prefer radials.
My question is will standard rims fit on this truck? Would a junkyard be the best place to get them?
measure the bolt pattern diameter. For example, my Dakota IFS on my '59 is a "5 on 4.5". Translation: it has a 5-bolt pattern that is 4.5" in diameter. Be careful not to get a wheel that is off-set too far outward (take it from me, I just broke a hub for this reason on my stock suspension).
I'd guess the stock rims are too narrow for the larger radials. Wider 16" rims exist, but are getting harder to find in junkyards.
Other rims have the same bolt pattern (Dodge and Jeep etc), but some aren't supported by the drum as well as the Ford rims - seems to be a space under the bolt area. These are easy to spot however, as the steel at the hub hole is turned in toward the drum where the Ford's turn out away from the drum. Confused?
'54 with original wheels should have a 5 on 5 1/2" pattern. This is a standard pattern for F100's up to at least '72. I'm pretty sure its even later than that. Last time I needed a set of steel wheels, I got 4 out of a salvage yard off a '69 for my '53. Most of the wheels you find on the 1/2 tons are going to be 15" though, so you may look into a newer set of wheels from cragar or american racing if you want larger than that.
The local tire store franchise told me you can't put radials on my old 16" rims on my '54. I go to my local garage where I get my trucks and cars inspected and the good old boys there said sure you can put radials on them. He ordered a set of radials that looked a lot like the black wall bias plies. My truck now has tubeless radials on the original rims for over 2 years now and I have had no problems! If you want to know the size let me know and I can go out to the garage and look.
I have been running 225/75 R16 Monarch Trailmaster tires on my '55 on stock 16" rims. We matched the diameter to an inflated but scary looking original bias ply. Speedo reads accurately, and it really calmed down the revs on the 312 that had been stuck with F70/15s and the stock 3.92 rear.
The trailmaster tread is an M&S but not wildly knobby, rides pretty quiet, and adds just enough meat of width to modernize the look a notch. (those stocker bias plys really made a 'shopping cart' out of the Bignose)
This is an old post of mine. If you are not hung up on a full 'Hot Wheels" look and not trying to G-load every corner, this tire size works great
